Hiking Hawaii - The Perfect Way in Which to Experience the Islands

When my girlfriend and I were making plans for our first trip to Hawaii we faced many of the same questions most travelers do. How many islands should we visit? Which islands do we go to? What sights and attractions do we partake in? How about beaches??

It occurred to us that most travelers, at least those that we were acquainted with went to Maui or Oahu, or both. Touring Honolulu, attending a luau, visiting Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center along with Diamond Head and Waikiki became part of our agenda as I am certain it has been for many.

Well, we have now visited the Islands twice and although we eventually saw Diamond Head and spent some time on Waikiki we have yet to attend a luau and have not seen Pearl Harbor or the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Shortly before finalizing our trip, I starting thinking what might be the best way to truly experience the islands and their natural beauty. I then came up with the idea of hiking, did a great deal of research on the internet and eventually purchased The Hikers Guide to the Hawaiian Islands by Stuart M. Ball, which I highly recommend.

Although my girlfriend and I are in good physical shape; we work out, lift weights and love to walk; we have never actually went hiking. I was over fifty and her fast approaching. One of the many things that appealed to me about hiking the islands was the lack of dangerous wildlife. There are no bears or poisonous snakes or the like. So we felt comfortable going off on our own and exploring the beauty that Hawaii had to offer.

We took a 360 degree turn and planned our trip to Kauai and Hawaii (We would return the following year and hike Maui and Oahu) bought some good hiking shoes, a backpack, some rain ponchos, bug repellent, packed our cameras and off we went.

A few tips I might share from our experience. Depending on where you are staying, you may have to drive a considerable distance to the trail head. We drove anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 ½ hours to reach our destination. We started out early each morning, usually by 5:30 so there was very little traffic and we had the trails almost entirely to ourselves (We would take ten hikes, two of which we never saw another sole) Bring a sweatshirt, it is cool in the morning. I found a walking stick to be incredibly helpful due to the uneven terrain and the continuous climbs and descents. Maybe it was because of the time we went out, but bugs were never a problem for us.

The ten hikes we ending up taking (three each on Kauai, Maui and Hawaii; one on Oahu) were all between 4 and 6.8 miles with elevation gains between 500 and 1600 feet and were regarded as novice to intermediate in degree of difficulty. The following were our five favorites.

5) Pipiwai Trail, Maui - Often referred to as the Oheo Gulch trail. Anyone embarking on a vacation to Maui should experience the Road to Hana. It is regarded as one of Hawaii's must see attractions and is rated #2 on America's list of most scenic drives. One must travel the Hana Highway to reach the Pipiwai trail, there is no other means. The distance itself is less than 60 miles, but with it's approximately 600 hair pin turns and 60 one way bridges it took nearly 3½ to drive without stopping. It was close to an additional hour drive past the town of Hana to the trail head.

The hike itself is a very relaxing one, with an easily traveled and well maintained trail. The elevation gains are minimal and the distance (4 miles round trip) is very manageable and depending upon how much time you spend looking at the sights, can be completed in two hours.

You will walk along side and across two bridges along the Seven Sacred Pools. The only other couple that we saw on this hike was swimming when we approached them. There is a bamboo forest that towers a hundred feet or more into the sky almost blocking out all sunlight and the trail eventually ends at the 400 foot Waimoku Falls where we found to be the perfect place to have lunch. You will need to cross the stream to reach this point. Purchase a cheap pair of water shoes to make the crossing.

4) Kilauea Iki, Hawaii - Located in Hawaii Volcano National Park, this trail is a four mile loop with a maximum elevation gain of 400 feet. It begins and ends in a beautiful rain forest which is so peaceful and tranquil you never want to leave. The trail is very well maintained and the variety of unique trees that you will not see any where else was a highlight of this hike. That is of course until you complete your decline to the Kilauea Crater.

This hike will take you across the crater covered in lava over 400 feet thick. You will pass dozens of active steam vents as you cross the rough terrain. You will see a great deal of new growth as it tries to emerge through the cracks in the lava and you can not help but think of what it was like back in 1959 when Kilauea erupted spewing lave almost 2,000 feet in the air.

3) Awaawapuhi Trail, Kauai - located in Kokee State Park, this was the most physically demanding of all of the hikes we took. At 6½ miles with an elevation gain of 1,600 feet we were thoroughly exhausted when we were finished. Of course this was our third day of hiking in a row, so that may have had something to do with it. Like most of the trails we hiked, this one was very easy to follow. It starts off heavily wooded and along the way becomes less dense and much drier in landscape. The highlight of this hike is when you reach the Nualolo Cliffs. The view from here is utterly amazing; sheer cliffs with some of the most interesting rock formations imaginable and nothing but the beautiful blue Pacific behind it all. There is a picnic table making it the perfect place to stop for lunch and enjoy the view before heading out for your return trip.

We did not really notice the 1600 foot elevation difference while reaching this spot, but you better believe we noticed it on the return. Be prepared, although very gradual (You have over three miles to traverse this elevation) it proves to be very grueling at times. For us it almost seemed as if we would never find the trail head and when we finally did, we sat in the car exhausted, but glad we did it.

2) Waipoo Falls (Waimea Canyon), Kauai - There are several hikes in the Waimea Canyon area, this one takes you to the top of the Canyon. It starts off on what appears to be a service road, eventually turns into a very well maintained path and includes a fairly easy to navigate rocky climb towards the end. (Here is where a walking stick comes into play) The distance like so many of the hikes is four miles and although you will find yourself at an elevation of nearly 3500 feet, must of this was covered during the ride up to the trail head. You only end up climbing a little over 500 feet.

The views of the Canyon from up top are remarkable. The different hues of green, red and brown in the Canyon walls can be seen forever. You want to keep taking picture after picture and that is pretty much what we did.

For me, the most pleasant of all the hikes.

1) Kalalau Trail - The trail everyone talks about and movies have been made of. The entire Kalalau trail is 22 miles in and out and you need to acquire a camping permit in order to complete. There are two days hikes that can be taken along the trail as well. The eight mile hike to Hanakapiai Falls or the most commonly traveled 4 mile hike to Hanakapiai Beach which is the hike we took.

Even the four mile hike can be challenging to most. The terrain is very muddy and rocking and you must account for your footing at all times. You begin to climb immediately through lush tropical vegetation. To your left are the sheer cliffs, to your right, a sudden drop to the Pacific Ocean. Although not to be taken lightly, it is not as dangerous as it might seem. I am not completely comfortable with heights, but felt confident on this hike. Once you travel a distance of about one mile and reach an altitude of several hundred feet the first views of the Napali Coast become visible and this alone is worth the entire trip.

You will eventually descend into the valley and reach your destination, Hanakaiai Beach. You must cross a narrow, but fast moving stream in order to reach the beach. Although tempting, swimming is not advisable as evidenced by the sign which totaled 87 people had since drowned at the time when we were there. Watching the waves, it was not only awe inspiring, but quite obvious why swimming was not advised.

Unlike most of the other hikes, this one can get very crowded. Even though we set out very early as we did each morning and saw only one or two people on our way to the beach, we must have passed hundreds on our way out.

Hawaii Condo Rentals For The Greatest Vacation Of Your Life!

Hawaii is the youngest and largest of all the islands in the Hawaiian Chain. The island is commonly known as "The Big island", to eliminate confusion with Hawaii, the state. The interesting thing about Hawaii is that the island continues to grow thanks to Mount Kilauea. Mount Kilauea is an active volcano in hawaii Volcanoes National Park which continues to spew lava into the ocean creating more land. The Big island is not known for its beaches as the other islands are, but Hawaii Condo rentals offer a lot more than others. The Volcanoes National Park is the centerpiece of the island and attracts many visitors every year to admire the wonder of an active volcano that has been continually erupting since 1983.

In the center of the island you will find Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two dormant volcanoes and the also the highest point in Hawaii. Mauna Loa has been classified as the largest volcano on earth. Mauna Kea, its neighbor, is the tallest point in Hawaii at 13, 796 feet and when measured from the base to the summit, the tallest mountain in the world. While Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, Mauna Kea has another 20,000 feet which is buried underneath the ocean bringing its height to 33,000 feet. This is a wonderful place to stargaze at night or admire the island from above. With the island's location in the Pacific, it contains the southernmost point of the United States. Known as Ka Lae or Southpoint, it also the site of an unusual beach. Papakolea is a green sand beach and only two are known to exist anywhere in the world, the other being in Guam. The journey to the Green Sand Beach is difficult, but if you are up to the challenge, it is well worth the trip from your Hawaii Condo.

The island has three other National Parks which include Pu'uhonua Honaunau, a sacred burial ground and home to the Royal Chiefs of Hawaii. A Hawaii rantal on

the Big island is also a great place to go whale watching when the migrating season pushes them from up north to the warmer waters of Hawaii. Quick Tips/Suggestions: Highway 200, otherwise known as Saddle Road, crosses between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. If you are looking at the map and you want to cross from one side of the island to another, it may appear that Highway 200 is the quickest route.

However, Highway 200 has so many curves and dips that it nearly impossible to go faster than 30 miles an hour. It is more advisable to take the longer route and go a lot faster.

If you plan to visit the Green Sand Beach, be advised that due to the conditions of the road leading to the beach, that many car rental companies forbid you to take their cars on the road. If you do in violation of the agreement, they can void your contract. Clear it with the car rental company before proceeding. The Big island has two major airports, Hilo and Kona, the two major cities on the island. The only way to get around the island is by car. There is limited transportation in the two major cities. The roads on the Big island follow the coastline. The only road that cuts across the island, Highway 200, should not be used except for visiting Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea. The drive from Kona to Hilo is about a 100 miles and takes about two hours.

How Pricing of Vacation Packages Has Affected Hawaii's Economy

Hawaii vacation packages

Hawaii's visitor numbers are continually improving and the volume of Hawaii vacation packages sold by travel agencies, airlines, hoteliers and destination marketing companies is growing. Tourism, Hawaii's number one industry, is leading Hawaii's recovery out of the recession.

A recent survey done by Hospitality Advisors, LLC shows steady improvement in Hawaii's tourism. The company found statewide hotel occupancy averaged 75.7 percent in August 2010, a 6.3 percent increase over comparable period last year.

These numbers are also reflective of the growing confidence of airlines that serve the Hawaii market. Hawaiian Airlines is expanding its routes both domestically and internationally, most recently adding a flight from Las Vegas to Maui as well as launching service from Japan and from South Korea within the next few months. Alaska Airlines is expanding its routes to Hawaii; while Allegiant Air will be launching service to Hawaii from smaller cites on the US mainland, starting in 2011.

This recovery, led by improvements the state's ability to sell air travel, hotel rooms and Hawaii vacation packages overall, is helping to keep the state's unemployment rate figures down. Hawaii's unemployment rate currently stands at 6.4 percent, while the US national average rate stands at 9.6 percent. This is in dramatic contrast to other destination areas like Las Vegas, where unemployment is currently around 14%.

However, some are arguing that the news is not all that good for the Hawaii visitor industry by citing average room rate prices continue to be relatively unchanged. They claim most visitors to Hawaii book their holidays because they are attracted by heavily discounted pricing and that such discounts on Hawaii vacation packages are not good for the tourist industry in general, presumably because airlines, hotels and car rental companies are making less money.

Others believe that discounted Hawaii vacation packages are good for the tourist industry as a whole and that those who focus exclusively on the average price of a Hawaii vacation packages are missing the big picture. An increase in the sheer amount of tourists is beneficial to Hawaii because more packages are being sold and because of the spin-off benefits in other part of the economy served by the travel market. This includes increased spending on meals, souvenirs, tours and activities and so forth.

There's another important argument in support of the benefits of maintaining lowered pricing on packages, at least for the time being. Due to the recession, other major tourist destination areas that compete with Hawaii, like Florida, the Caribbean and Mexico, are struggling to maintain their share of the "fun and sun" market. As we head into the peak winter season, these traditional competitors to Hawaii are under a lot of economic pressure to lower their own vacation package pricing even more so than they are right now. So any increase in Hawaii vacation packages could exacerbate tourist losses to these alternative destinations to Hawaii.

Top 5 Reasons to Travel to Hawaii This Year

There is no place else in the world quite like the Hawaiian Islands, which is evidenced by the herds of people who take Hawaii vacations every year. Many people travel to Hawaii every year because they enjoy the ambiance so much. It's common for mainland Americans to own timeshares in Hawaii, and this is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. for all-inclusive vacation packages.

There are many reasons why this is such a popular vacation destination. If you're thinking about traveling to Hawaii this year, here are five more reasons why you should start planning your trip as soon as possible.

#1: A Change in Surroundings at Every Turn

The Big Island of Hawaii alone contains 11 out of the 13 climatic zones. The landscape changes quickly as you move around Hawaii, from the luxury resorts with dazzling views of the Pacific Ocean and the black lava fields on the Kona Coast to the volcanoes, amazing flora and grassy expanses of the East Side, and not to mention all the other islands!

#2: Active Volcanoes

The most active volcano in the world, Kilauea Crater, is located in the Hawaiian Islands. If you want active volcanoes, there are plenty to see here, as well as the lava tubes, rain forests and hiking trails that surround them.

#3: Culture and History

Culture and history are probably not be the first things that come to mind when you think of Hawaii travel, but you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that the islands have much to offer in this respect. There are plenty of cultural destinations and historical sites, particularly on the Big Island, which is the cradle of Hawaiian civilization. Polynesian settlers arrived on the Big Island approximately 2,000 years ago. As the site of many ancient battles and the birthplace of three Hawaiian kings, there is plenty of history here. You'll find ancient rock carvings explaining the island's history through symbolic imagery at any of the petroglyph parks throughout the island, just for starters.

#4: Get Your Golf On

If you love golf, Hawaii vacations would be ideal for you. The Big Island alone offers 18 different golf courses with amazing views. There are even dedicated golf resorts throughout the Hawaiian Islands that cater to the needs of the golf enthusiast.

#5: Scuba Heaven

The Hawaiian Islands are among the best places to go scuba diving in the world. In fact, Scuba Diving Magazine named Hawaii the #1 Dive Destination in the world. It's easy to take classes, rent equipment and enjoy the underwater world to the fullest here. This is one of the most popular things to do during Hawaii travel.

Hawaii Camping - Is it For You?

If you like camping, you may want to consider camping in Hawaii. Besides saving you thousands on accommodations, sleeping and waking up to sound of the ocean or forest is a wonderful way to relax into the rhythm of the island.

Now, I'm really into nature as well as saving money (without sacrificing too much fun or comfort), so mainland and Hawaii camping vacations have always been something I've enjoyed over the years. But not everyone camps to save money.

Plain and simple, Americans love pitching tents, sitting around the campfire and enjoying the great outdoors. The fact is camping is the number one outdoor vacation activity in America. About 33 percent of U.S. adults have reported going on a camping vacation in the past decade, and about 27 percent report wanting to camp again.

Yet, relatively few realize they can camp in Hawaii. While the State of Hawaii doesn't have stats on visitors and camping, based on where most visitors stay, I'd guesstimate less than 1 percent of those from the mainland camp here.

Locals camp all the time - they know how much fun it is! I've taken weekend camping trips with my children while they were growing up here since 1988 and since then full on Hawaii camping vacations from the mainland. Those who don't live here don't hear much about Hawaii camping because the state doesn't promote it.

Have you ever seen a campground featured in a Hawaii travel brochure or at the state's tourism site? Let's face it, the backbone to Hawaii's economy is tourism, and hotels, even those not owned locally, generate a lot of money for Hawaii. You don't have to spend money on a hotel though to benefit Hawaii. Be a good eco tourist, shop local, spend money on local activities. Have more fun and a richer cultural experience!

Hawaii camping is not for everyone. If your heart is set on the pampering and luxurious amenities at a resort, you might not want to book a vacation at a Hawaii campground. However, if you also enjoy camping, maybe try it here for a night or two. A couple I interviewed on Oahu, Mike and Ghislaine Burbridge, seniors from Nova Scotia, were camping near me in the Friends of Malaekahana Campground. Both world travelers, they had spent the first two weeks of their vacation at a five star resort and an upscale B&B. Still they told me that their 2-week Hawaii camping experience was "the highlight" of their month long vacation in Hawaii.

Many of Hawaii's campgrounds are located on beaches, as well as in the cool, upland forests. As anywhere else, you wouldn't want to camp at just any Hawaii campground. Some are party spots, others not easily accessible. But there are many, family friendly, beautiful places to camp here in the islands. A few more that come to mind are the YMCA campground overlooking Maui's Hana Coast, Spencer's on the Big Island's sunny Kohala Coast, Camp Sloggett in upland Kauai and the county campground at Anini Beach, both on Kauai.
